How to Connect Profiled Metal Sheets and Insulated Sandwich Panels?

2026-06-11

Why Connection Methods Matter

In metal building envelope system design, the connection methods for color steel sheets, metal-faced sandwich panels, and profiled metal sheets directly determine the waterproofing performance, wind uplift resistance, and service life of roofs and walls. Different panel profiles and structural conditions require matching connection techniques. According to current standards, profiled metal sheets are divided into four main types based on their longitudinal edge connection details: lap joint, standing seam (crimped connection), clip lock (snap-on connection), and mechanical lock. Meanwhile, the fixing methods between panels and the primary structure also have their own considerations.

Four Connection Methods Explained

lap joint

☆A lap joint is the most basic method. Panels naturally overlap each other and are fastened directly through the panel into the supporting structural members using fasteners. Construction is simple, but fasteners remain exposed.

standing seam joint

☆A standing seam (crimped connection) is more sophisticated. After overlapping, the panel edges are roll-crimped along the length using special tools and are connected to the structure through fixed clips. No fasteners are exposed, offering excellent waterproofing.

clip lock joint

☆A clip lock (snap-on connection) falls between the two. Panels are pressed and snapped together, also using fixed clips, with relatively fast installation speeds.

mechanical lock joint

☆A mechanical lock is the strongest. Panels interlock with each other at the overlapping area and are locked together with the supporting structure through connecting brackets, forming an integral load-bearing system.

Practical Applications for Each Method

☆Lap joints are mostly used for ordinary factory buildings and warehouses in non-strong-wind regions, offering low cost but limited wind uplift resistance.

☆Standing seams, especially the 360° standing seam, typically use sliding clips to allow for thermal expansion and contraction, making them suitable for large span metal roofs and high wind pressure areas.

☆Clip lock connections work well for projects with moderate wind resistance requirements and a fast construction schedule.

☆Mechanical locks are used in high wind intensity zones, typhoon-prone areas, and important public buildings to ensure safety under extreme weather conditions. Both clips and connecting brackets are secured to the supporting structural members with fasteners.

How to Choose the Right Method

In summary, correctly selecting the connection method for profiled metal sheets requires comprehensive consideration of the project's local climate conditions, building span, waterproofing grade, and economic costs. From simple lap joints to complex mechanical locks, each technique has its suitable application. Meanwhile, matching the correct clip type (fixed clip vs. sliding clip) is equally critical. Only by integrating panel profile, connection detail, and primary structure fixing method can the long-term safety and reliability of a metal building envelope be ensured.
